2020 Skoda Octavia spied ahead of Frankfurt debut

The Czech brand's all-new wagon has been snapped wearing thin disguise, sporting Superb-inspired looks and larger body.

The next-generation Skoda Octavia wagon has been spied with very little disguise this week, ahead of its debut in Frankfurt later this year.

Despite already straddling the small and medium segments, the Octavia looks set to grow even larger than the current model, most likely to give more space to the new Scala hatchback.

The Octavia will ride on a revised version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, set to underpin the next-gen versions of the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf.

With that in mind, a wider breadth of electrification options should be available, too – namely 48V mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions – along with the company's latest and greatest driver assist and infotainment technologies.

As before, it's expected the Octavia will be available in both liftback 'sedan' and wagon body styles, with styling likely to be inspired by the larger Superb, going by the vehicle seen here. The jacked-up Octavia Scout wagon should be offered at some point, too.

We've previously speculated the new Octavia will be revealed early in 2020, but it's been reported in Europe that company boss, Bernhard Maier, announced at Skoda's annual press conference earlier this year that the new model will debut later this year – likely at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

"The Octavia remains our best-selling product. We sold 388,200 units of the car in 2018, even in its seventh year of life," he said.

"We will introduce a new generation of Octavia later this year, just in time for the model's 60th birthday."

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice earlier this year, Skoda Australia's communications boss, Paul Pottinger, indicated the local arm is expecting the new-gen Octavia to lob Down Under during the first quarter of 2021.

"Production starts in the backend of 2020 for Q1 2021 launch," he said in March.

That puts the Octavia around six months behind the Mk8 Volkswagen Golf it shares its underpinnings with, which is due during the third quarter of 2020.
