2020 BMW X5 M50i, X7 M50i unveiled

The range-topping BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i were unveiled overnight, ahead of an anticipated Australian launch before the end of the year.

Like the M850i xDrive, both crossovers are powered by a 4.4-litre V8 with two turbochargers located within the V. The engine is said to make 390kW of power between 5500 and 6000rpm, and 750Nm between 1800rpm and 4600rpm.

All of that is channelled to the ground via an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

BMW claims the X5 M50i (below) can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds. The larger and heavier X7 M50i (top) needs 4.7s to complete the same dash.

Both cars feature an electronically controlled differential lock, and 21-inch alloy wheels as standard.

The X5 M50i rides on an adaptive suspension system with selectable Sport and Comfort modes. There's also a dual-axle adaptive air suspension system, which is standard on the X7 version and optional on the X5.

In Sport mode or when travelling over 138km/h the air suspension setup automatically lowers the car by 20mm, and it can be set to raise the car by 40mm over the standard ride height for a bit of light off-road action.

Visually, the M50i versions of the X5 and X7 are differentiated from their lesser siblings by larger front air intakes, revised bumper designs, blacked out trim, Cerium Grey highlights, and more prominent side sills.

The interior benefits from plenty of M-branded pieces, including the gear selector and leather steering wheel, perforated Vernasca leather upholstery, and illuminated sill plates with M50i logos.

Options include 22-inch alloy wheels, rear-wheel steering, and active electronic anti-roll stabilisers.

Australia
BMW's local arm says it expects to have both the X5 M50i and X7 M50i on sale "later in 2019". Production of both cars begins August this year at the company's factory in Spartanburg, North Carolina.

Local specification and pricing will be announced closer to launch. Stay tuned.
