ANCAP: Mazda 3, Evoque, RAV4, Touareg, UX get 5 star ratings

Independent crash testing firm, ANCAP, has released its latest round of safety scores this week, with several new models getting the full five stars.

Among these were the Lexus UX, Mazda 3, Range Rover Evoque, Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Touareg.

While all these vehicles wear a 2019-stamped five-star ANCAP safety rating, it's worth noting that the actual testing was carried out by European sister arm, Euro NCAP, using European-spec vehicles that were left-hand drive (except for the Range Rover).

One of the standout performers amongst this set was the new-generation Mazda 3, which managed an impressive 98% for adult occupant protection.

The Mazda also scored 89% for child protection, 81% for vulnerable road users, and 76% for safety assist.

Other impressive results were recorded by the UX, RAV4 and Evoque, all of which scored over 90% for adult occupant protection (96%, 93% and 94% respectively), while all vehicles scored in the high 80 percentile for child occupant protection.

The Lexus and Toyota also recorded "strong performance" in the area of safety assists.

However, in the oblique pole test, "engineers noted an issue with the deployment of the side curtain airbag and penalties were applied,” said James Goodwin, CEO for ANCAP.

Meanwhile, some concerns were raised about the Touareg's results as well, despite its 89% adult occupant rating.

"The Volkswagen Touareg offered ‘Good’ protection in side impact testing. ‘Marginal’ levels of protection were noted for the chest of the driver in both frontal crash tests and the oblique pole test,” Goodwin said.

ANCAP's latest scores apply to all variants of each model tested.
