Porsche to test electric sports vehicle based on Boxster

Porsche announced yesterday it is working on an all-electric sports vehicle. Based on the Porsche Boxster, the company says it is planning to test prototypes early next year to record data and understand the demands associated, both infrastructure-wise and on production materials.

The testing will be a part of the Stuttgart Model Region for Electromobility. The scheme is a testing field for the EV to discover its requirements placed upon the infrastructure. Porsche is developing three test vehicles to run around in the city, but Porsche has said in recent reports that it is planning on releasing a production version in the near future.

President and chief executive officer of Porsche AG, Michael Macht said in a recent report,

“We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future. But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche.”

Porsche is taking on a very pro-active approach here with the EV, by using it in a particular city first to see what kinds of demands are needed, but also to see if the vehicles are still consistent at being a true Porsche; not simply an electric vehicle, but a sports EV. Porsche is adamant the EV lives up to the qualities and presence of current Porsche models.

Ruf, Porsche pioneer and tuning specialist, showcased an electric sports vehicle using the Porsche 911 as a platform last year. The eRuf Greenster was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009 and presented a 270kW Siemens electric motor that is capable of displacing an Earth-wrenching 950Nm of torque.

Ruf Automobile is renowned in the business for taking Porsche vehicles and adding huge amounts of technology into them, some of which is then exchanged back to Porsche. Ruf's integrated roll cage system was introduced and available on all 911-based vehicles in its range in 1997. Porsche then adopted similar features to its vehicles later on.

The eRuf Greenster proves it is possible to create a desirable electric sports car and represents true Porsche credentials. The eRuf Greenster will sprint from 0-100km/h in just five seconds flat and go onto a top speed of 250km/h. Ruf says the battery can be charged from a 400V outlet in one hour.

Bring on the Porsche EV we say, at least it'll be an electric vehicle most will be proud to own.
