2020 Honda E order books open… for some markets

Order books for the hotly-anticipated Honda E city electric vehicle have opened in the UK, Germany, Norway and France, ahead of the car's production debut in the second quarter of 2020.

A dedicated online platform has been launched, allowing keen customers to reserve their place in the production queue with a refundable deposit. In the UK, that's £800 ($1490).

Honda says it's received more than 25,000 expressions of interest for the E, previewed in 2017 by the Urban EV concept at the Tokyo motor show and the E Prototype in Geneva this year.

Five exterior colour options will be offered initially: Platinum White Metallic, Crystal Black Pearl, Crystal Blue Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, and Charge Yellow.

“We are delighted to be offering a reservation option to our customers in select European markets for the first time with the Honda E,” said Jean-Marc Streng, general manager of Honda Automobile Europe.

“The Honda E in prototype form has received an overwhelming response and with over 25,000 registrations of interest across Europe, customers now have the opportunity to secure priority status to order the model."

Thus far, Honda has provided very few details about its first mainstream EV. It's promised a driving range of more than 200km, and the ability recharge the car to 80% capacity within 30 minutes using a fast charger.

Australia

“We definitely want it. As an urban funky looking runabout, absolutely,” said Honda Australia boss, Stephen Collins, when asked about the chances of the Geneva motor show concept, the Honda E Prototype, coming to Australia.

“We helped pioneer hybrids in Australia since the original Insight (in 2001). We quit hybrids because the market was so small... we couldn’t make it economically stack up and we had a lot of other priorities in our business.”
