2020 Audi RS3 spied at the Nurburgring

Next-generation hyper hatch spotted during testing wearing current model as a disguise, ahead of a likely debut in 2020.

Photographers have snapped images of what is believed to be the new Audi RS3 doing rounds at the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

"New RS3? But that's the current one!" you may say. Well, if you look closely you'll notice some subtle fender extensions at both the front and the rear to hide the new model's wider tracks.

It's believed the new RS3 won't debut until 2020, around six months after the new-generation A3 on which it will be based.

Building on the next A3 – which is expected to follow the eighth-gen Volkswagen Golf in offering a far more digital and tech-heavy cabin – the new RS3 should maintain its singing five-pot turbo engine with a small power bump despite stricter emissions regulations.

The current model makes 294kW and 480Nm from its 2.5-litre displacement, so we're anticipating a slight increase to at least 300kW and 500Nm. As with the vehicle on sale today, the new RS3 should send drive to all four wheels via a quick shifting dual-clutch transmission.

Vehicles sold in the European market will likely be fitted with petrol particulate filters to keep emissions down – it's unclear how this will affect Australia at this stage.
