Mazda has released its all-new small sedan, just a month or so after the related hatchback. Pricing and equipment is largely identical, though the sedan body affords a larger boot and a unique interior colour scheme for the Astina grade.

The new-generation Mazda 3 sedan has hit Australian showrooms, priced from the same $24,990 entry point as its hatchback twin.

Apart from the obvious design differences, the sedan-bodied 3 gets a much larger 444-litre boot (the hatch offers 295L), which is also up 34L on the previous-generation sedan.

Pricing and equipment otherwise mirrors that of the hatchback range, which offers six trim levels in both manual and automatic guises, along with two naturally-aspirated engine options – at least until the SkyActiv-X compression-ignition petrol arrives later this year.

'G20' models come with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder atmo petrol making 114kW at 6000rpm and 200Nm at 4000rpm. 'G25' variants, meanwhile, get a larger 2.5-litre atmo four with 139kW (@6000rpm) and 252Nm (@4000rpm).

Both powertrains come with a six-speed manual as standard, with a six-speed automatic available for $1000 extra across the range. Idle stop/start technology is fitted to both engines, with combined fuel consumption rated at 6.1L/100km and 6.5L/100km respectively.

The only difference between the two in this sense is that the top-spec G25 Astina sedan exclusively offers Pure White leather as a no-cost option, which also extends the Pure White colour scheme throughout the cabin. Hatchback buyers get the unique choice of Burgundy leather instead, with black a no-cost option for both body types.

As per the hatchback, all versions of the Mazda 3 sedan get a host of active safety and driver assistance systems as standard equipment, including autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and forward obstruction warning.

Other highlights from the base level include an 8.0-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, DAB+ digital radio, eight-speaker audio, 16-inch alloys, push-button start, along with automatic LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

The Mazda 3 sedan will be offered in seven body colours – Soul Red Crystal, Machine Grey, Snowflake White, Sonic Silver, Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black and Titanium Flash.

Like the wider range, the Mazda 3 sedan is covered by the company's five year, unlimited kilometre factory warranty.
