2019 Toyota GR Supra detailed for Europe

Two-tier range to launch with turbocharged inline six as standard, along with an active differential and a full suite of driver assists.

Toyota Europe has released initial details for its GR Supra, ahead of first deliveries arriving in the region during the northern hemisphere's summer (June-August).

At launch, there will be two trim levels – Active and Premium – though both will be powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six sourced from development partner BMW, which develops 250kW and 500Nm.

The motor is hooked up to an eight-speed torque converter auto which sends drive exclusively to the rear wheels via an active differential with torque vectoring as standard. Toyota claims the Supra can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds using the transmission's Launch Control function.

Standard equipment on the Supra Active includes the aforementioned active rear diff, adaptive suspension, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, Brembo sports brakes (348mm front, 345mm rear) with red calipers (four-piston front, single-piston rear) , dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control with stop&go, keyless entry with push-button start, adaptive LED headlights, LED daytime-running lights and tail-lights, auto-dimming mirrors both inside and out, rain-sensing wipers and a rear-view camera.

There's also Alcantara-trimmed sports seats with power adjustment, heating and memory for the front seats, selectable drive modes (Normal and Sport) that tailor the vehicle's powertrain, steering, suspension and rear diff, 10-speaker audio, an 8.8-inch high-definition infotainment display with satellite navigation, bluetooth, USB input, Apple CarPlay, and access to connected services like real-time traffic updates and concierge functions.

Rounding out the standard spec is the Safety+ package, which includes the aforementioned adaptive cruise system along with autonomous emergency braking with both pedestrian and cyclist detection (though the latter is during the day only), lane departure warning with 'Steering Assist', high-beam assist, road sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse AEB, and tyre pressure monitoring.

Opting for the Supra Premium adds black leather upholstery, 12-speaker JBL premium sound, driver's head-up display, wireless smartphone charge pad, along with the interior storage and lighting packs.

Pricing for these two models hasn't been announced by Toyota's European arm at this stage.

Finally, there's also the Supra A90 Edition, which is essentially the special launch edition, offered exclusively to the first 90 European customers that placed pre-orders on the reborn Toyota nameplate.

With just 90 units available to the European market, the A90 Edition gets special appointments like Storm Grey matte paint, matte black alloys, and a red leather interior. Equipment otherwise mirrors the Premium grade.

Further details like pricing for the region will likely be announced in the coming weeks.

Australia

CarAdvice recently reported initial details for the local Supra line-up, with a similar two-pronged approach looking likely for our market.

Unlike Europe, however, the entry-level version is anticipated to be a more pared-back, more focused vehicle, featuring a smaller infotainment system and smaller 18-inch wheels, though with the full-fat front brake package as standard (the rears are believed to be smaller, though).

The higher-spec model is understood to be in line with the Supra Premium specification to be offered in Europe.

Toyota Australia will offer an initial batch of 300 units, though the fact the company has already received thousands of expressions of interest means the first 12 months' worth of allocation could well be accounted for.

As for how customers will be able to place an order locally, it's believed Toyota will employ an online system that will require prospective buyers to commit to a vehicle on the spot with a deposit. Read more about that here.
