BMW M5 Edition 35 Years revealed – UPDATE

Limited-edition performance sedan marks three and a half decades of the M5 nameplate, and features a range of exclusive appointments.

BMW M has revealed a commemorative version of its M5 super sedan, dubbed the Edition 35 Years.

UPDATE, 20/5/19: BMW Australia has confirmed Australia will get a limited allocation of the M5 Edition 35 Years. See bottom of article for details.

UPDATE, 30/5/19: More images of the M5 Edition 35 Years have been published to the company's global media site, showing the first implementation of the OS7.0 infotainment setup in the 5 Series range. BMW Australia is unable to confirm at this stage whether this will be reflected across the wider 5 Series range, though expect to see it rolled out over the next 6-12 months.

Limited to just 350 units globally, the special edition model acknowledges the three and a half decades the M5 nameplate has been around, kicking off with the original in 1984 that drew upon the inline six straight out of the M1 supercar.

The M5 Edition 35 Years is based on the Competition specification, meaning it gets the beefier 460kW and 750Nm version of the company's stonking 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. With M xDrive all-wheel traction and a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic, the M5 Edition 35 Years maintains the Competition's performance claims of 3.3 seconds from 0-100, hitting 200km/h after just 10.8 seconds.

Features specific to the limited-edition model include Frozen Dark Grey II metallic, which the company says has been given a special pigmentation to create the impression of a silky matte surface, new 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and exclusive Graphite Grey finish, and the M compound brake system with high-gloss black calipers.

Owners can specify the optional carbon-ceramic stoppers which get gold calipers, too.

Inside, the M5 Edition 35 Years gets Merino full leather upholstery in black with beige contrast top-stitching, gold anodised aluminium carbon structure trim inserts throughout the cabin, 'M5 Edition 35 Jahre' door sill finishers, and an 'M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350' plaque on the cupholder over the centre console.

BMW seems to have added its new OS7.0 infotainment system as well. We're waiting for official confirmation as to whether this will be rolled out across the wider 5 Series line-up. The BMW M5 Edition 35 Years will go on sale globally in July, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, BMW Australia's product communications manager, Adam Davis, confirmed a limited allocation will be coming to Australia.

"Nothing on costs yet however we will be receiving 10 units from September for the Australian market," he said. Stay tuned for pricing and specification details in the coming months.
