Volvo V60 Cross Country earmarked for 2020 launch

Local arm indicates high-riding crossover wagon is 'expected' sometime next year.

Volvo Car Australia is planning to bring the new V60 Cross Country Down Under, but we won't see it until at least 2020.

Following confirmation of the standard V60 for the Australian market, the local division indicated it's "expecting" the high-riding version of its mid-sized wagon to lob sometime next year, though we're not quite sure exactly when at this stage.

The local arm also couldn't really divulge what Australia will get in terms of specification, either, though a quick scan of the global site could give us some clues.

Unlike the regular V60, the V60 Cross Country is limited to just three powertrain offerings globally, and currently there's no plug-in hybrid version, either.

It's anticipated we'll get two of the three available powertrains – the T5 petrol and the D4 diesel – both four-cylinder turbocharged units, both mated to eight-speed automatics, and both featuring all-wheel drive as standard.

The T5 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four that makes a healthy 184kW and 350Nm, while the D4 is also a 2.0-litre turbo unit (though diesel, obviously) and puts out 140kW and 400Nm.

Compared to the standard V60 wagon, the Cross Country sports an additional 68mm of ground clearance, a special off-road driving mode, and hill descent control. It also gets grey plastic extensions to the wheel arches, side sills and bumpers.

In Australia the V60 Cross Country will be the spiritual successor to the popular XC70 wagon, which was last sold here in 2016 before it was superseded by the larger V90 Cross Country.

Where the V60 has several natural rivals out of Germany, the Cross Country has fewer competitors. Its most direct rival in Australia would be the Audi A4 Allroad, which is priced from $74,800 before on-road costs. By comparison, the XC70 used to kick off at $65,290 in 2016.

The V60 Cross Country will likely start somewhere between $65k and $75k.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest, and let us know if you'd take the V60 Cross Country over an Audi A4 Allroad or Subaru Outback.
