2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG, CL65 AMG revealed

Mercedes-Benz has released the first official images and details of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG ahead of their debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in October.

The CL63 AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 is has been replaced by a more powerful 5.5-litre twin-turbo engine. Power and torque are up from 386kW and 630Nm to 400kW and 800Nm, and can be boosted to 420kW a whopping 900Nm with the optional AMG Performance Package.

The sprint from 0-100km/h is over in 4.4 seconds (4.3secs in the Performance variant) yet Mercedes says the smaller engine has reduced fuel consumption by around 27 percent (down from 14.5 litres/100km to around 10.6) and CO2 by 30 percent.

The CL65 AMG maintains its twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12 – the most powerful engine in the Mercedes-Benz range – and the new tweaked version now produces an additional 13kW for a total of 463kW. Torque remains unchanged at a nice, round 1000Nm. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions have both improved by 3.5 percent in the CL65 AMG with combined fuel consumption now around 14.0 litres/100km.

Mercedes says its V12 is capable of producing 1200Nm of torque but has contained the engine to allow it to work with the five-speed automatic transmission which carries over from the outgoing model. The CL63 AMG is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and both ’boxes feature Sport, Comfort and Manual shifting modes.

New standard features include Direct Steer, crosswind stabilisation and a new torque-vectoring brake system to combat understeer, while Mercedes’ usual raft of driver-assist systems includes blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping, night-view and drowsiness detection to name a few.

Other features include the internal COMAND system with a 40GB hard-drive, voice control, an 11-speaker surround sound system, 8in display, bi-Xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, electronic boot closer and four-level massage, heated and active ventilated front seats that seemingly rely on String Theory to move in 14 different directions.

Official pricing is yet to be released and is expected to be finalised closer to the debut of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and CL65 AMG at the Paris Motor Show in around one month.

In Australia, the current model CL63 AMG starts at $403,353 while the CL65 AMG tops the price charts at $500,805.
