2020 Volkswagen Golf cabin snapped

The new Golf will have a high-tech interior, with technology nicked from the new Touareg the highlight.

The hotly-anticipated 2020 Mk8 Volkswagen Golf has been snapped during testing, revealing its high-tech new interior design.

Set to launch later this year (or early next), the Golf will wade into battle with a variation of the dual-screen infotainment system debuted in the Touareg.

There's a fully digital instrument binnacle in front of the driver, flanked by a large touchscreen infotainment system – in the Touareg, the central screen measures 15 inches diagonally.

It's worth bearing in mind, the fully digital setup with the gigantic screen is optional in the Touareg, and could well be the same in the Golf. We also could see smaller screens standard, and bigger screens optional.

Both screens are surrounded by gloss black but the centre console angles quite aggressively towards the driver, giving it a different look to, say, the fully flat setup in Mercedes-Benz models.

Climate control appears to be handled by capacitive buttons below the screen, which should help deliver a clean, simple dashboard design with plenty of storage space down low.

In a radical departure from the last three generations of Golf, the air vents themselves are low-set. That's no surprise, given the design direction taken by the Polo and Touareg.

Although it's likely to be a pretty strong selling point for Volkswagen, the Golf's high-tech cabin has also been a pain point during development.

Because it's wirelessly connected, the system opens the door to a new world of security threats. Where previously the only way into a car's software system was by accessing its CAN bus, allowing external wireless connections opens the door for all manner of new access points.

"Due to their online connectivity there is a lot more software especially in the area of security, which is a real challenge since the car is no longer a closed ecosystem," Jurgen Stackmann, head of the Volkswagen Brand, told Automotive News Europe.

Production for the new Golf will kick off "by the end of the third quarter" in Wolfsburg, according to reports out of Europe. Interestingly, one of the spy pics here (click on the images for the full gallery) appears to hide an Audi A3 mule in the background.

Australia

Volkswagen Australia says the new Golf is on track to be launched in Australia during the third quarter of 2020.

Further details will be announced closer to launch, though the local arm is confident the GTI hot hatch variant will arrive alongside the core range, with the flagship R to follow 'soon after'.
