2020 Audi Q3 Sportback spied

New 'coupe SUV' looks almost production ready, and will take on the BMW X2 when it goes on sale.

The Audi Q3 Sportback has been spied doing some hot laps around the Nurburgring Nordschleife ahead of its planned launch later this year.

From the B-pillar forwards, the Q3 Sportback will share practically all of its elements with the regular version of the Q3.

At the rear there's a heavily raked tailgate and windscreen, slimmer D-pillars, and an upwards kick for the quarter window.

The tail-lights don't look too different, but the rear bumper has been given a sportier look, and the tailgate has an integrated lip spoiler.

Under the skin, the Q3 Sportback will use the same MQB platform as the Q3, and will share drivetrains with its more practical sibling.

All the major elements of the interior, such as the dashboard and overall design, should be carried over too.

Earlier this year, Audi confirmed the new Q3-based "coupe" would use the Sportback moniker to differentiate itself, and would be produced alongside its sibling in Gyor, Hungary.

The company seemingly backed itself into a corner when it named its new electric crossover, based on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, as the Q4 e-tron.

Both of these moves violate the Audi tradition of giving a higher numbered name to the "coupe" version of a particular model, hence the A5 coupe is based on the A4 sedan, and the Q8 "coupe SUV" is based on the Q7.
