Smart Final Collector’s Edition revealed

Smart has revealed the Final Collector's Edition based on its ForTwo city car, marking the last run of combustion-powered vehicles for the micro car specialist before it switches to full e-mobility.

Just 21 examples of these special editions will be produced, developed in collaboration with industrial designer, Konstantin Grcic.

The Final Collector's Edition commemorates 21 years of the Smart brand, the 21-vehicle final production run, and "21 years always a step ahead".

Smart says the final batch will leave the factory in August in 2019, and will be "realised" in cooperation with the Brabus tuning firm.

All 21 units will feature the eye-catching colour combination of brilliant yellow and matte black for the exterior, the former based on the original "hello yellow" from the first Smart car.

The transition from yellow to matte black is inspired by a previous collaboration between Smart and Swiss artist Roman Signer, who had a vehicle drive through a form of tunnel where a bucket of paint was poured over the Smart.

"Smart remains much more than a car – it represents the grand vision of a new form of urban mobility," said Daniel Lescow, head of brand and product management for Smart.

"For us, the Final Collector's Edition marks both the end of an era and a new beginning as a significant milestone in the history of smart and towards a future horizon."

In May last year, chairman for Smart's parent company Daimler, Dieter Zetsche, announced the micro car brand will go all-electric by 2020.

The EQ ForTwo and ForFour are already on sale in select markets, including Europe, and will become the manufacturer's sole offerings once the Final Collector's Edition models roll down the production line.

More recently, Chinese automotive player Geely bought a 50% stake in the Smart brand, announcing a joint venture with Daimler to run the micro car company.

Smart is also set to exit the US and Canadian markets by the end of the 2019 model year, with the primary focus being the European and Chinese markets.

As for Australia, Smart was pulled from our market in 2015 during the change over between the second-generation and third-generation ForTwo range, with no plans to reintroduce the brand Down Under at this stage.
