Almost 12 months ago, we covered Aston Martin's plan to bring one of the best-known movie cars of all time back to life. Now, the team at Aston Martin Works has revealed more details about the array of gadgets on offer in the car.
The DB5 Goldfinger Continuation will be built in extremely limited numbers, and will feature the following gadgets from the movie:
- Rear smoke screen delivery system
- Rear simulated oil slick delivery system
- Revolving number plates front and rear (triple plates)
- Simulated twin front machine guns
- Bullet resistant rear shield
- Battering rams front and rear
- Simulated radar screen tracker map
- Telephone in driver’s door
- Gear knob actuator button
- Armrest and centre console-mounted switchgear
- Under-seat hidden weapons/storage tray
According to Chris Corbould OBE, the man responsible for the original DB5's gadgets in Goldfinger, making them work on a consumer car – even one that isn't road legal, and one of which just 25 examples will be built – is pretty tricky.
"The main challenge has been to recreate the gadgets from the film world and transfer them into a consumer product," Corbould said.
"We have licence in the film world to ‘cheat’ different aspects under controlled conditions. For instance, we might have four different cars to accommodate four different gadgets. We obviously don't have that luxury on these DB5s as all the gadgets have to work in the same car all the time."
Beyond the gadgets, the 25 examples will be finished in Silver Birch paint, in keeping with the original. Aston Martin hasn't released outputs, but the original made 282hp (210kW) and 380Nm from its 4.0-litre inline-six engine, put to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
Although it debuted in Goldfinger, the DB5 has featured in plenty of other James Bond films. It's showed up in Thunderball, Tomorrow Never Dies, GoldenEye, Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre.
All that heritage doesn't come cheap. You'll pay £2.75 million ($4.8 million) before taxes for a DB5 Goldfinger Continuation, with deliveries to kick off in 2020.
