Lotus to hire 200 engineers as part of expansion

With the backing of Chinese automaker Geely, Lotus is no longer happy to tread water. Instead, it has aggressive expansion plans.

Phil Popham, CEO of Lotus Cars, has confirmed details about the company's ambitious plan with The Telegraph. The automaker will hire around 200 engineers to help it triple sales to 5000 vehicles per year.

In addition to this, the company will also open a new engineering centre in the UK Midlands, the company's first facility outside its Norfolk headquarters.

Moving even further afield, Lotus vehicles will be produced at a new factory for premium vehicles being built by Geely in Wuhai, a city in China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Geely bought a majority stake in Lotus in September 2017 from the Malaysian conglomerate which also owned Proton.

As part of the company's Geely-funded revival, it is developing a new platform for its vehicles, and seems likely to join the crossover brigade.

It is also developing a new electric hypercar, codenamed Type 130, which will have at least 750kW of power. With production likely to be limited to under 50 cars, pricing is rumoured to start from at least £2 million ($3.8 million).
