2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 spied
The mid-engined racer from Weissach is slowly taking shape, but we don't have a firm reveal date just yet.
Porsche is prepping its hottest, track-ready 718 Cayman at the Nurburgring, ahead of a likely reveal later this year.
The new GT4 will follow in the footsteps of the last model, which took Porsche's mid-engined sports car and turned it into a track weapon.
Since that car was released, Porsche has subbed the atmospheric flat-six from the Cayman for a turbocharged four-cylinder unit. Expect the GT4 to buck that trend, instead running with the 3.8-litre engine from the motorsports 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport or the 4.0-litre engine used in the 991.2 911 GT3.
Given the latter has been made to pass emissions standards with both a PDK and a manual transmission, we'd suggest it's more likely. How much power it will make isn't clear, but the last GT4 was tuned to leave the 911 GT3 some room atop the performance tree. Don't expect that to change.
Compared to the regular 718 Cayman, the GT4 will gain a massive (potentially adjustable) rear wing sitting on the rear deck, along with a more aggressive rear diffuser than stock. The brakes are bigger than stock, the wheels skimpier (although they could be pre-production units), and the car's overall stance lower and meaner.
Up front, there's a deeper splitter and gaping, low-set air intakes. Looks mean, right?
The new 718 GT4 has been snapped testing at the Nurburgring for a while now. Our first sighting was in May 2017, but since then the bodywork has gradually become less ragged, and the details have slowly taken shape.
The latest mule wears what appear to be production brake calipers, for example, but progress appears to be slow. It's believed the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Boxster Speedster may debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
