2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC starts production

Mercedes-Benz has commenced production of the all-new EQC electric crossover at its Bremen facility in Germany, ahead of its global launch in the coming weeks.

Available to order now in Europe, the EQC 400 4Matic has a base price of €71,281 ($113,740), though the special Edition 1886 launch variant (pictured) is available from €84,930.30 ($135,520).

Full details of the latter are to be confirmed in full, though the company says the EQC Edition 1886 "features an extensive range of optional equipment and offers a wide range of customer-oriented electric-mobility services".

As for the start of production, the EQC is coming down the same line as the C-Class saloon and estate, along with the GLC and GLC Coupe.

Mercedes-Benz says it has invested heavily in Industry 4.0 manufacturing solutions in the form of high-tech equipment, Big Data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The EQC is said to embody the marque's 'CASE' digitalisation strategy – Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Services, and Electric Drive – in the form of its MBUX intelligent infotainment system, available driver assistance systems, and alternative powertrain strategy.

Speaking of MBUX, the EQC comes as standard with the dual 10.25-inch screens, one for the driver's instruments and the other for the central infotainment unit, offering learning capabilities and 'Hey Mercedes' voice command functionality.

The EQC's navigation system uniquely plots out charging points and can navigate routes that optimise the vehicle's driving range.

In Europe various assistance systems are part of the optional Driving Assistance Package, which adds Active Brake Assist with cornering and cross-traffic functions, adaptive cruise control, and active steering assist for semi-autonomous highway driving.

To refresh your memory in terms of spec, the EQC 400 4Matic features a dual-motor electric drivetrain that quotes outputs of 300kW and 760Nm, driving all four wheels. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-100 time of 5.1 seconds and an electronically-governed top speed of 180km/h.

Driving range is rated at 445-471km on the combined NEDC cycle depending on the vehicle's configuration (wheel/tyres, options etc.), with the lithium-ion battery's capacity quoted at 80kWh. Expect a lesser range on the stricter WLTP cycle.

Australia

The first batch of Mercedes-Benz EQC vehicles are set to land Down Under around October, with final pricing and specifications to be announced closer to launch.

It's understood the new EV will cost around the $150,000 mark, with Australia's initial allocation for 2019 already spoken for well before the EQC officially goes on sale.
