Buick Enspire concept headed for production – report

GM premium subsidiary's exterior design boss confirms four-door crossover coupe has been approved for production, and the recent concept is our best preview.

The Buick Enspire concept revealed at last year's Beijing motor show could be headed to production, if a new report is any guide.

CarDesignNews recently spoke with Bob Boniface, global director of exterior design for Buick, at GM's technical centre in Warren, Michigan, where they saw a full-size model for a "four-door crossover with a sweeping coupe-like roofline" which Boniface said had been confirmed for production.

The publication was unable to properly identify the vehicle, though Boniface added that a production vehicle based on this model would be "in addition to, and not a replacement of" anything in Buick's current line-up.

CarDesignNews says in its report that this full-size crossover model shares a lot of design cues with an "Orange Car" sketch that morphs from a sketch to a full-motion CGI animation during the tour of the studio.

Worth noting is the Enspire concept (pictured) was presented in a burnt orange finish, perhaps the colour of the sketch and the full-size clay model are clues to what the company has planned.

The 2018 Enspire concept featured an all-electric drivetrain that put out a total of 410kW, good for a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) claim of 4.0 seconds.

On a full charge, Buick said the Enspire concept could travel up to 595km, though the exact capacity of the battery hasn't been confirmed. Wireless and fast-charging methods are also supported.

It's unclear whether the production model will be reserved for China or rolled out as a global product across GM's various markets, though CarDesignNews adds that Boniface shut down rumours of the brand becoming exclusive to the Middle Kingdom despite 80 per cent of sales coming from the region.

Stay tuned for all the latest.
