Range Rover Evoque PHEV coming in 2020 – report

Land Rover has confirmed it won't offer an all-electric Evoque for the time being, instead focusing on plug-in hybrid tech in the short-term.

Speaking with Britain's Autocar, Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) UK boss, Rawdon Glover, said "there will be a market for a small to medium-sized SUV", though such a model won't arrive in the current generation.

It's believed the heavily revised platform underpinning the second-generation Evoque cannot accommodate pure-electric drivetrains, hence the company will wait for the next-gen model to offer EV tech.

To make up for its lack of EV offering, Range Rover will offer a plug-in hybrid version of its entry-level SUV, due sometime next year.

According to Autocar's report, the PHEV system will pair a 197bhp (147kW) 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 107bhp (80kW) electric motor.

Glover reportedly described the upcoming Evoque PHEV as a "fleet game-changer" for Land Rover and projected the electrified model will account for more than a third of Evoque sales when it goes on sale in the UK early next year.

Beyond the Evoque, the flagship Range Rover is also expected to get a full EV variation within the next five years, though details are still to be officially announced.
