2019 BMW X3 M and X4 M pricing and specs

BMW Australia has priced and specced its powered-up new X3 and X4 twins, the X3 M and X4 M Competition.

Both will debut in higher-grade Competition form Down Under, priced from $157,900 before on-road costs as an X3 or $164,900 before on-roads in style-focused X4 guise.

Power in both comes from a new 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six pumping out 375kW and 600Nm. It's an all-new unit for M GmbH, and leans on technology like a forged crankshaft and a cylinder head manufactured – in part, at least – using 3D printing.

Both turbochargers are single-scroll units, with each supplying compressed air to cylinders 1-3 and 4-6 respectively. It's hooked up to an eight-speed automatic, which in turn feeds all four wheels.

Peak power comes in at 6250rpm and sticks around until the 7200rpm redline, while peak torque is available at just 2600rpm. As a result, the X3 M will hit 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds.

Standard equipment will be generous in Australia. Both X3 and X4 M models will come with a 16-speaker surround sound system, a panoramic glass sunroof, keyless entry, and the extended merino leather trim.

A 10.25-inch infotainment system running iDrive is standard, backed by a digital instrument binnacle and a full-colour head-up display. It's worth bearing in mind, it isn't running the latest BMW OS7.0 system from the X5 and 3 Series.

The standard Driving Assistant Plus package brings lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, front and rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist.

There are still a few options. Steering wheel heating ($500) and acoustic glazing ($500) kick things off, followed by 'sun protection glazing' ($800) and heated seats both front and rear passengers ($700). Seat ventilation is $1600, an inbuilt television $2250, and gesture control adds $450 to the sticker price.

Finally, Apple CarPlay is a laughable $623 option. Come on BMW, you've gotta be kidding.

There'll be no mistaking the M Competition twins for regular models on the outside. They ride on a set of 21-inch alloy wheels, and have aggressive bumpers both front and rear. Both ride lower than the M40i, while trainspotters will notice the black mirror caps, grilles and trim highlights.
