Toyota reaches 100,000 hybrid sales in Australia

Toyota Australia has racked up more than 100,000 hybrid sales in Australia, nearly 20 years since the Prius first went on sale locally.

According to the Japanese brand, which is also Australia's top-selling manufacturer, the milestone was reached "towards the end of April", ahead of the launch of the new RAV4 Hybrid this month.

The petrol-electric RAV4 joins Toyota's popular hybrid range which includes the Corolla, Camry, Prius, Prius C and Prius V, with two more models planned to launch Down Under before the end of the year.

One of these will be the new-generation Corolla Sedan, the company has confirmed, though the second remains a mystery.

It was originally thought the new-generation Kluger, which was revealed at the New York motor show last month, would be the other 2019 hybrid launch for Toyota, however, that's not due Down Under until next year.

So, that likely forms one of the two extra hybrid Toyota models due before the end of 2020.

As for the additional 2019 hybrid launch, we reckon it could be the C-HR, which is offered overseas in hybrid form and could be in for a mid-life update toward the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the other hybrid planned for a launch by the end of 2020 could be the next-generation Yaris light car, which is anticipated to debut either late this year or early next.

Toyota Australia says 45.4% of all Camry sales are hybrid so far this year, with 31.4% of Corolla sales being petrol-electric.

Despite the smaller ratio, the Corolla is now the most popular hybrid in Australia, with 2957 registrations to the end of April 2019, a bit ahead of the Camry Hybrid's 2298.

"There is a lot of buzz lately about EVs being the future of mobility, but the reality is the technology is already here and Toyota has been leading the way with hybrid petrol-electric powertrains in Australia for almost 20 years," said Sean Hanley, vice president for sales and marketing at Toyota Australia.

"Hybrid electric technology is not only more affordable than pure electric vehicles, it requires no charging infrastructure, emits less CO2 than a traditional petrol combustion engine and is more fuel-efficient."

"An owner of today's Camry Ascent Sport Hybrid can achieve savings of more than $800* and reduce CO2 emissions by almost 1.3 tonnes* every year, so the total economic and environmental savings from 100,000 hybrids are huge," he said.," Hanley continued.

"This clearly demonstrates that hybrid drivetrains are the most affordable and accessible solution available today. It is the most practical way to reduce emissions because it is available now and it uses existing infrastructure."
