13,876 double-cab utes could have faulty side steps prone to cracking.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has issued a recall for the 2016 model-year Triton double cab, over concerns vehicles with pipe-style side steps could be prone to corrosion.

According to the Japanese manufacturer, the rivets for the side step cover could corrode and fracture, especially "if usage involves exposure to salt or anti-freeze agent".

If the condition occurs, all the rivets could fracture and the side steps could inadvertently drop off the vehicle. This poses a hazard for other road users and could cause the step to be 'difficult' to use for vehicle occupants.

There's a total of 13,876 units affected by this recall, sold from 2 May 2015 through 26 May 2017 – a VIN list is available here.

Owners will be contacted via mail by Mitsubishi Motors Australia, and will be advised to present their vehicle to their local dealer for rectification.
