Volkswagen Golf-based SUV mule spied

A jacked-up hatchback prototype has been spotted in Germany, but we're not entirely sure what it is...

A prototype based on the current-generation Volkswagen Golf has been spotted near the Nurburgring this week, having previously been snapped during winter testing in Sweden.

What's interesting is that this appears to be an early development mule for a crossover model, given the extended wheel arches hiding wider tracks front and rear, jacked-up suspension, and a modified rear.

Photographers noted this vehicle was definitely powered by a combustion engine, meaning it isn't an upcoming ID electric model, so what could Volkswagen have in its plans?

Given its Golf donor car, we're expecting this new crossover to be based on the company's ubiquitous MQB architecture, which underpins everything from the Golf and Polo hatchbacks to the Tiguan SUV.

It's reported that the Volkswagen Group's annual media conference in March confirmed a new five-seat crossover to be launched in the coming years, though its name or form is yet to be specified.

Additionally, Volkswagen already has two small five-seat crossovers which have launched in Europe and are on the way to Australia early next year – the Polo-based T-Cross and the Golf-based T-Roc.

Could VW be looking to fill yet another SUV niche? Perhaps an early prototype for the next Golf Alltrack? We'll have to wait and see.
