2021 BMW i4 spied

The new i4 is coming along, snapped testing on the streets of Munich while wearing heavy camouflage. It'll be a four-door coupe when it launches, developed alongside the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

The upcoming BMW i4 sedan has been snapped testing on the streets of Munich, wearing a silhouette not dissimilar to that of the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Built on the BMW CLAR architecture, the four-door coupe will lob with a driving range of 600km on the tricky WLTP drive cycle. Impressive. It'll hit 100km/h in 4.0 seconds, and keep pulling beyond 200km/h.

Production will start in 2021 at BMW's factory in Munich. As for how we know all this? Well, the company has told us. Makes life easy, right?

Without a hungry internal-combustion engine to cool, the front end is expected to adopt a slicker, more streamlined look than the equivalent 4er. It's tough to tell on this test mule, given BMW has fitted it with a conventional kidney grille and lower air intake.

The doorhandles look different to those on current BMW cars, perhaps in search of better aerodynamics, and the prototype's ride height looks taller than we've come to expect.

Maybe that's because it's a test car, maybe it's because the i4 will have a taller ride to accomodate its lithium-ion battery. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

Behind the wheel, BMW has raided its parts bin. The dashboard and infotainment system have been nicked from the current 3 Series, which would suggest it'll run with BMW OS7.0 in the cabin, albeit modified to deliver more information about the car's battery.

There's still a while to wait before we see the i4 in production guise, but we'd suggest it could launch at the Frankfurt motor show in 2021. Stay tuned for more.
