Volvo has made some very subtle spec updates to its large SUV, adding kit across its three trim levels without changing the car's price.

Volvo has given its XC90 SUV a very mild spec refresh for the 2019 model year, adding some luxury touches to high-end models without changing its pricing.

The line-up maintains its three-tier model structure, staring with Momentum, rolling through Inscription to R-Design. Three powertrains are offered, starting with the XC90 D5.

It's powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine making 165kW and 470Nm, good for a 7.8-second sprint to 100km/h and 6.2L/100km on the combined cycle.

Jumping to the T6 gets you a turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine making 235kW and 400Nm, for a 6.5-second run to 100km/h and 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle.

The range-topping powertrain is the T8 PHEV, which adds a 65kW/240Nm electric motor to the T6 petrol engine for a claimed 2.1L/100km on the combined cycle. In the real world, of course, that figure could be much higher.

For 2019, the XC90 Momentum has gained a head-up display (previously $1900) as standard, while the Inscription has picked up rear sun-blinds, powered seat bolsters in the front, and a fancier 'tailored' instrument binnacle.

Finally, the range-topping R-Design gains the tailored instrument binnacle and rear sun-blind for 2019. Otherwise, the spec sheet remains unchanged.

In the Momentum, you get factory navigation as standard, parking sensors at the front and rear, a rear-view camera, LED headlights, four-zone climate control, leather seats, and autonomous emergency braking. The car rides on 19-inch alloy wheels, and misses out on the sporty styling offered on the R-Design.

Jumping to the Inscription adds a set of 20-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry with a hands-free tailgate, the 'IntelliSafe' safety suite with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts, and Comfort Nappa leather on the seats, among other subtle trim tweaks.

The range-topping R-Design brings about diamond-cut 20-inch alloys, perforated leather trim, paddle shifters, and unique trim elements for the dash and doors. When coupled with the most powerful T8 setup, opting R-Design also brings a crystal shifter, a panoramic sunroof and a tyre repair kit.
