The Americans are the latest market to get an eye-catching special edition of the popular sports car. An Australian introduction is still off the cards.

Toyota USA has announced the 86 Hakone Edition, a British Racing Green-coloured special that's based on a similar edition revealed for Japan in February.

Available as part of the 2020 model-year range in North America, the Hakone Edition is based on the US range's 'GT' specification, and is claimed to pay tribute to the iconic Hakone Turnpike in Japan – dubbed "one of the great driving roads in the world".

Key features include the eye-catching 'Hakone' green exterior paint, 17-inch 'twisted spoke' alloy wheels finished in bronze, and a black rear wing.

Inside, there's tan/black Alcantara seats, tan highlights throughout the cabin, an embroidered 86 logo on the passenger's side of the dashboard, and a model-specific boot carpet trim with embossed 86 logo.

Buyers of the Hakone Edition will also get a pair of tan-coloured key gloves, and a folio cover with embossed 86 logo and black stitching.

Power comes from the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder 'boxer' engine, marking 205hp (152kW) and 156lb-ft (212Nm) when paired with the six-speed manual – the six-speed auto gets a slightly less powerful 200hp (147kW) and 151lb-ft (205Nm) tune.

Since it's based on the GT variant, the Hakone Edition carries over kit like LED headlights, power door mirrors, chrome-tipped exhaust, LED fog-lights, multi-function steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, and keyless entry with push-button start.

The 86 Hakone Edition goes on sale in the North American fall, with pricing to be confirmed closer to launch.

Australia

In February following the reveal of the Japanese-market British Green Limited version, Toyota Australia's manager for public affairs, Brodie Bott, said "The British Green Limited won’t be offered on the Toyota 86 in the Australian market".

Bummer.
