Ford Transit Custom Sport gets power bump in Europe

Overseas model gets upgraded outputs and new technology options, while the smaller Transit Connect Sport debuts.

Ford of Europe has introduced an updated range of 'Sport' vans, including a more powerful version of the Transit Custom Sport.

The upgraded 2.0-litre 'EcoBlue' diesel engine in the Transit Custom Sport now makes 185PS (136kW) and 415Nm, a 9% increase in power output compared to the outgoing model.

Interestingly, the Australian-market version due in the coming months makes the same 136kW, but 405Nm (-10Nm).

Other changes include the introduction of the FordPass Connect on-board modem, which turns the vehicle into a rolling WiFi hotspot for up to 10 devices.

The European model can also now be had with more driver assist technologies like an active park assist, adaptive cruise control with intelligent speed limiter, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring that supports trailers up to 10 metres in length.

Australian-bound models will get the majority of those systems as standard equipment, though local vehicles haven't been confirmed to offer the automated park assistant at this stage.

Ford also announced the new Ford Transit Connect Sport, based on the smaller Transit Connect that isn't available locally.

Power in the Connect Sport comes from a 120PS (110kW) 1.5-litre EcoBlue diesel, mated to a six-speed manual as standard.

Standard equipment includes a bodykit, matte black sports stripes with silver or orange accents, 16-inch Dark Stainless alloys, partial leather seats, and heated driver and outboard passenger seats.

There's also dual-zone climate control, cruise control with speed limiter, while features like Sync3 and FordPass Connect are optionally available.

Australia

As mentioned above, the Transit Custom Sport is already on its way to Australian showrooms, with pricing for the updated range confirmed in March.

The Transit Custom Sport will arrive locally with a  slightly different 136kW/405Nm version of the 2.0-litre EcoBlue oiler, available solely with a six-speed automatic.

We've reached out to Ford's local division to see if all of the updates announced for Europe will be echoed across the Australian range, and are awaiting a response. Stay tuned.
