Peugeot 208: New-gen model earmarked for 2020 launch in Oz

Overhauled light hatch should play a part in the French brand's push to attract younger buyers, according to local director.

Peugeot Australia has indicated the new-generation 208 hatchback should make its way Down Under sometime in 2020, though it hasn't confirmed specific timing nor if we'll see the all-electric version.

Speaking with media at the Australian launch of the Citroen C3 Aircross and Peugeot Expert, Ben Farlow, managing director for Peugeot Citroen Australia, said the new 208 should be available to Australia "shortly after" its European sales launch late this year or early next.

"Nothing’s been confirmed yet," he noted, however, adding "[the] 208 sets the context for what we want to do with the younger generation with Peugeot."

"I see a place for it. We’ve got options."

It's unclear what Australia would get in terms of model range and powertrains, though we'd suggest the higher output petrols (75kW and 97kW) are likely starters, along with the new eight-speed automatic transmission.

As for the all-electric e-208 (above), and other electrified options in the PSA Group's portfolio, Farlow said the local arm has "no announcements".

The e-208 presents a unique opportunity for the French brand, provided it can get the price right. With a WLTP-certified range of 340km from its 50kWh battery pack, the Peugeot e-208 could really shake up the 'affordable' EV market if it landed locally for under $50,000.

Currently, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is priced from $44,990 plus on-road costs and offers a claimed 280km of range on the outgoing NEDC test cycle, while the pint-sized Renault Zoe offers 317km of range (WLTP) for $47,490.

The Nissan Leaf, meanwhile, costs $49,990 plus ORCs and claims 270km of driving range on the WLTP cycle – so the Peugeot would one-up all three sub-$50,000 competitors if it came here in that price bracket.

In addition to beating its rivals on paper, the Peugeot arguably has the most upmarket cabin of the competitive set going by what we've seen from the car's reveal (above), incorporating the digital-heavy Peugeot i-Cockpit dashboard layout and a full suite of available driver assist technologies.
