2020 Opel Corsa previewed

Fifth-generation light hatch teased in a set of camouflaged development images, ahead of its debut later this year.

Opel and Vauxhall have previewed the next-generation Corsa hatchback with an official set of images showing a camouflaged prototype being put through its paces.

Set to debut sometime later in 2019, the fifth-gen Corsa is set to move to the PSA Group's 'CMP' modular platform for compact vehicles, which already underpins the new DS 3 Crossback and Peugeot 208.

Not only does this allow for a weight reduction of "more than 10 per cent" over the outgoing model, which should make the new Corsa the 'most efficient yet', the new underpinnings mean the Corsa will offer pure-electric power for the first time.

Opel has also confirmed the new Corsa will be available with adaptive 'IntelliLux' matrix LED headlights for the first time, a feature that is yet to be available at this end of the market.

"The glare-free matrix headlights automatically and continuously adapt to the prevailing traffic situation and surroundings," the company says in its press release.

"Approaching traffic and preceding vehicles are simply ‘cut out’ of the illuminated area. Glare is minimised and drivers enjoy optimum visibility for the first time in the small-car market segment."

It's worth noting Opel's reference to the small-car segment likely refers to the Corsa's 'supermini' classification in Europe, which includes light cars like the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta.

The Corsa will also get an "all-new infotainment hub", and the company's "latest generation ESP" which aims to strike the balance between the 'fun-to-drive' qualities expected of the company's vehicles and overall safety.

Stay tuned for more Opel/Vauxhall Corsa updates in the coming months, ahead of its European launch before year's end.

Australia

Given Opel pulled out of the Australian market a couple of years ago, it's unlikely we'll see the Corsa in local showrooms anytime soon.

Currently, the Opel Astra and Insignia are available Down Under badged as Holdens, though the recent acquisition of both Opel and Vauxhall by the PSA Group from General Motors means the Australian lion brand won't be getting any more Opel products in future given its GM ownership.
