2019 Aston Martin Vantage AMR revealed

The Vantage has been given a rougher, tougher makeover. Just 200 are being built, and they'll all have a manual transmission. That's right, a manual!

Aston Martin has revealed its more focused take on the Vantage, wearing an AMR badge and a retro-inspired livery to boot.

First up, the engine. It's the same AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 offered in the regular Vantage, making the same 375kW of power and 625Nm. That's 60Nm down on the stock car, likely to protect the manual driveline.

It's a Mercedes-AMG unit, but it's not mated to an automatic transmission – for the first time, this engine is hooked up to a manual transmission.

It's a seven-speed unit developed by motorsports mob Graziano, complete with the same dogleg first featured on the transmission in the previous Vantage V12 S.

To help nervous drivers (and ensure they don't cause big damage to an engine making big power, presumably) the AMR features a system called AMShift. Not only will it rev-match on downshifts, removing the need to heel-and-toe, the system allows drivers to keep the throttle pinned through upshifts.

Shedding the automatic transmission doesn't just allow the driver to get more hands-on, it helps save weight. The new gearbox, along with the inclusion of carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, both play a role in cutting 95kg from the Vantage's weight sticker. Handy when you're on a track.

Power is channeled through a locking rear differential. Aston Martin's clever Skyhook dampers feature, allowing the driver the driver to scroll through Sport, Sport+ and Track modes depending on mood. And the whole lot has been tuned at Silverstone by ex-Lotus chassis guru Matt Becker.

Just 200 examples of the AMR will be made, and they'll be offered in a range of retro liveries. Well, 59 of them will. That's a nod to the fact it's been 60 years since Aston Martin won Le Mans with the DBR1.

The one you see here is dubbed Vantage 59 and blends Stirling Green paint with a Lime stripe, complete with a 59 motif on the nose. The cabin is finished in Dark Knight leather and Alcantara, offset with an AMR lime stripe and stitching. It's a perfect match for the exterior.

Four other designer liveries are available, but we have no images of them.

Australia

Deliveries of the Vantage AMR will begin in the fourth quarter of 2019 for the US, Europe and the UK. Timing for Australia hasn't been confirmed, but the car will be available Down Under.

The 'Hero' model, with its regular selection of colours, will be priced from $369,950 before on-road costs, while the Halo you see here is worth $409,950 before on-roads.
