2019 Renault Alaskan: Updated Navara twin revealed

Renault has given its partner to the Nissan Navara and Mercedes-Benz X-Class a working over, with bigger wheels and a bigger payload.

Renault's pickup partner to the Nissan Navara, the Alaskan, has been treated to a facelift and suspension overhaul.

Headlining the changes is a fresh five-link rear suspension, which bumps peak payload to 1100kg. That's an increase of between 127kg and 146kg, depending on variant, while its 3500kg braked-towing capacity remains unchanged.

Renault also says it should be a more comfortable, less jiggly ute to drive on less-than-perfect road surfaces. The rear drum brakes have been subbed for discs, and autonomous emergency braking is now available.

Inside, the infotainment system has gained Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a new surround-view camera to make parking easier.

Sure, subtle changes, but relevant amid strong competition from its in-house development partners (Nissan Navara, Mercedes-Benz X-Class) and external rivals like the Ford Ranger and Mitsubishi L200 (known locally as Triton).

Trailer Sway Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Hill Start Assist are all part of the car's technology suite for 2019, too.

Power still comes from a 2.3-litre turbo-diesel engine, but it's gained more modern emissions controls, including a selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

The base model makes 120kW and 425Nm, the upper-grade car 140kW and 425Nm. In Australia, the base Navara offers 402Nm from the same engine.

Externally, the changes are limited. There are new 17-inch wheels to replace the existing 16-inch units, while a fresh set of 18s is available.

Australia

Now-resigned Renault Australia managing director, Andrew Moore, told CarAdvice of his desire to get the Alaskan in Australia.

At last check, the Alaskan was still on the table for early in 2020 but not confirmed.
