Porsche planning Panamera-based 8 Series rival – report

Two-door GT could see the return of the 928 badge, with underpinnings to be shared with the Bentley Continental.

A new report out of the UK indicates Porsche is working on a two-door version of its front-engined Panamera to rival the likes of the BMW 8 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Britain's Autocar claims scuttlebutt out of Europe suggests the company is developing a coupe and convertible based on the Panamera's MSB modular architecture that will offer enhanced practicality and everyday comfort over its 911 mid-engined sports car.

It's believed the new models may not even wear the Panamera badge despite sharing their underpinnings, leaving some to speculate it could see the return of the 928 nameplate.

Given the Panamera is based on the MSB platform, the two-door Porsche grand tourers would likely have a lot in common with the new Bentley Continental, the only other current model based on the Volkswagen Group's flagship front-engined rear-drive architecture, soon to be joined by the new Flying Spur in the coming months.

Speaking with the British publication, Porsche's design boss, Michael Mauer, said: "As a designer there are no limits to what I can conceive".

"I believe it is the design department’s role to sketch and consider every model it can for the future so that we are ready should anyone wish to pursue a project."

"But if you are asking me to confirm if such projects are on the way then you are going to be disappointed. It is not my role to consider such things," he added.

As for powertrains, the two-door Panamera models would likely offer the same range of turbocharged six- and eight-cylinder petrol engines as their sedan and wagon equivalents, including the option of plug-in hybrid technologies.

For now, however, nothing has been officially confirmed by the German marque, so we'll have to wait and see if these reports turn out to be true.
