2020 Volkswagen ID spied
The automaker has invested billions of dollars to develop its new MEB electric vehicle platform, and this hatch is the first production car based on it.
The Volkswagen ID hatch, the first model in the company's assault on the electric vehicle sector, has been spied undergoing cold weather testing in Europe.
Thought to be around the length of the current Volkswagen Golf, the new electric hatch has a tall hatch silhouette not too dissimilar to the smaller Honda Jazz.
From what we can see, the design is similar to the 2016 ID concept. Major changes include conventional rear doors, smaller wheels, traditional door handles and wing mirrors, and larger Golf-style tail-lights.
The showroom-ready car will be revealed later this year, and production will begin towards the tail end of 2019.
Rumours indicate pricing in Europe will start from around €30,000 ($47,000). Depending on the model, driving range is expected to be between 350 and 550 kilometres.
It's not known what electric hatch will be known as, but rumours suggest it could be branded as the Volkswagen ID Neo.
Follow up vehicles on the ID's MEB platform include the ID Buzz people mover and van, ID Vizzion sedan, and ID Roomzz large crossover.
Other Volkswagen Group brands will also use the MEB platform, with vehicles from Seat, Skoda and Audi already confirmed.
