2019 Audi S5 TDI revealed, not for Australia

The four-ringed marque is continuing to roll out performance diesels, claimed to be the 'ideal combination of efficiency and sportiness'.

Audi Sport has announced the S5 TDI in both coupe and four-door Sportback forms for the European market, bringing diesel power to the nameplate for the first time.

Like the new S6 and S7 models revealed a fortnight ago, the S5 TDI draws upon a 48V mild hybrid-assisted 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel, making 255kW and 700Nm – the latter available between 2500 and 3100rpm.

The company claims the S5 coupe can dash from 0-100 in 4.8 seconds (4.9 seconds for the Sportback), while top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Meanwhile, fuel consumption is rated at just 6.2L/100km on the combined cycle.

Drive is sent to the company's quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, the former able to send up to 85% of torque to the rear axle. In normal driving, however, the front to rear torque split is distributed 40:60.

Like other models fitted with this powertrain, the S5 TDI features electric powered compressor (EPC) and mild-hybrid technology. A standard 48V electrical system incorporates a belt alternator starter and can recuperate up to 8kW during deceleration.

The on-board lithium-ion battery pack measures 0.5kWh and lives under the booth floor, and allows for a coasting function that claims to save up to 0.4L/100km between 55 and 160km/h. It also means the idle stop/start function can switch off the engine from 22km/h under braking.

Various performance options will be available in Europe, including adaptive damper control, a rear sports differential with torque vectoring, and wheels up to 20 inches in diameter (18s are standard).

Like the existing petrol model, the S5 TDI features a range of the company's infotainment and driver assistance technologies, including the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit, an 8.3-inch MMI navigation plus infotainment system, WiFi hotspot, available Qi wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, autonomous emergency braking, turn assist, and rear cross-traffic assist.

Other standard kit includes LED headlights with dynamic indicators, S sport suspension, power-adjustable front sports seats trimmed in Alcantara/leather combination, heated front seats, and an S body kit.

The S5 TDI models will go on sale in Europe from May, with prices kicking off at €65,300 ($103,072.60) in Germany.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Audi's local corporate communications manager, Shaun Cleary, said: "At this stage, we have no current plans to bring the S5 TDI to Australia".

This echoes the decision to not introduce the TDI versions of the S6 and S7 Down Under, with the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol models destined for North America and the Middle East confirmed for our market.
