Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus would ‘love to sell cars into Australia’

The company has received some expressions of interest from Down Under, and believes it could sell cars in Australia if firm orders come through.

Jim Glickenhaus, founder and owner of Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, has told CarAdvice the car maker is interested in selling vehicles in the Middle East, China and Australia.

"We'd love to sell cars into Australia, and we believe we could easily meet the requirements with ... our NHTSA [National Highway Transport Safety Authority] approved [SCG 003], and we could easily make the car right-hand drive," Glickenhaus said at the New York motor show.

"The next model we come out with is a centre-seater. I think it would be legal because it could be either left- or right-hand drive."

So far Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus has only sold vehicles in the US. The only thing seemingly stopping sales to overseas markets, including Australia, are firm orders, although there have been enquiries from parties Down Under.

The company currently operates as a low volume manufacturer limited to 325 cars per year. Under this Obama-era rule, Glickenhaus needs to use engines from a major manufacturer and is exempt from crash testing and airbag requirements.

Vehicles are hand built in the company's factory in Sleepy Hollow, just an hour north of New York City.

The car on display in New York is a SCG 003CS and a road conversion of the company's GT3 Nurburgring race car.

To make it suitable for normal roads, the car was given slightly softer suspension, helical gears for the transmission, planking to protect some of the more vulnerable carbon-fibre parts, and lifters to help it over speed bumps.

It still has a derestricted BMW engine making around 485kW.

So far the company has built six SCG 003CS models for customers with a starting price of US$2.3 million ($3.2 million).
