Great Wall ute pricing puts Ssangyong in the firing line

The new ute from Great Wall has been revealed in Shanghai. The company wants to tackle the Ranger and HiLux, but it's going to be priced at the lower end of the market.

Great Wall is talking a big game with its new ute, boldly claiming it'll sit with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger as a top-three selling mid-sized ute globally, but its pricing Down Under will be a closer match for the Ssangyong Musso.

The mid-range 'Passenger' version of the as-yet unnamed ute will be priced at around $35,000 with an automatic transmission, diesel, and four-wheel drive according to Haval Australia managing director, Koma Li.

"As always, we will supply very good value to the market. You see the pickup today we showed, which has a lot of technologies and performance, but in terms of the price it will be a very sharp one," he told Australian, New Zealand and South African media in Shanghai.

Based on the car shown in Shanghai, standard equipment should be strong. Leather seats, a range of active safety technologies like AEB, a surround-view camera, and lane-departure warning, and a broader range of options all loom as selling points in that price region.

The rough-and-tough 'Off-Road Adventure' model will be more expensive, although by how much isn't clear.

The Ssangyong Musso Ultimate appears to be the closest spec match for the GWM ute, and is currently priced at $39,990 drive-away. A base Mitsubishi Triton costs $36,290 before on-road costs, but only in two-wheel drive guise.

At 5425mm long, 1972mm wide and 1893mm tall, the Great Wall ute is almost identical in length to the Ford Ranger, wider than an Amarok and comfortably taller than any of the existing dual-cab players down under, save for the Ranger Raptor. The cargo bay is a match for the Triton's length-wise, measuring up at 1520mm long.

The diesel won't be the only ute powertrain. It'll be offered with a petrol, too, and eventually pure-electric, hydrogen-powered, and hybrid models. The EV is set to lob Down Under, too, despite the risk it'll sell slowly. Brand building and sales numbers aren't necessarily the same thing, after all.

Along with the established crowd, the new Great Wall ute will need to ward off some competition from LDV. Its next-generation T60 ute will be a more powerful, upscale beast than before, with a full range of body options to boot.

It's expected to have 160kW and 480Nm, close to matching the Ford Ranger 2.0L's torque figure.
