Alex Misoyannis • At this week's New York motor show, Nissan has given its monstrously powerful GT-R a small update for the 2020 model year, including a revised Nismo range-topper and a new 50th Anniversary special edition.
2020 GT-R Nismo
The flagship GT-R has received a number of aerodynamic and handling tweaks to further improve its performance.
Visually, the 2020 Nismo features new 20-inch RAYS forged alloys, GT3-style front fenders with inbuilt vents and more carbon-fibre parts than ever before. These components not only add to the supersports car's visual appeal but improve aerodynamics and save weight – the Japanese brand claims the 2020 car is 30.5kg lighter than the outgoing 2019 model.
Bigger changes lie under the skin, where the GT-R Nismo gets carbon ceramic brakes for the first time. Measuring 410mm up front and 390mm at the rear, they’re clamped by six-piston Brembo calipers finished in bright yellow paint.
Nissan says that, when paired with the updated brake pads, the new brakes “generate more friction for an enhanced controlled feeling in all types of braking situations.” These brakes also carry over to the lower-spec Track Edition model.
Other additions include a titanium exhaust with blue burnt tips, revised suspension tuning, an ‘R’ mode for the gearbox and newly-developed Dunlop tyres.
The 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine remains unchanged, with identical outputs of 447kW of power and 652Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Inside, there are new red and black Nismo-branded sports bucket seats.
2020 GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition
The GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition has been created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original Skyline GT-R.
Visually, the Anniversary wears a two-tone livery that pays homage to classic Skyline race cars of the early 1970s. It is available in three different colour combinations - Pearl White with red stripes, Super Silver with white stripes and iconic Bayside Blue with white stripes – the latter of which has not featured on a GT-R since the legendary R34 Skyline of the late 1990s.
In addition to the stripes, other elements of the limited-edition paintjob include blue wheel spokes and 50th Anniversary badging on the rear bumper.
Inside, it features a new grey colour scheme, along with a unique steering wheel and shifter, special seat embossing and Alcantara headlining and sunvisors.
The 50th Anniversary GT-R is powered by the same 421kW/633Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 that drives all wheels through a six-speed DCT auto. Like the 2020 Nismo, the Anniversary gets an R mode for the transmission and a titanium exhaust.
Nissan has confirmed that both the 2020 GT-R Nismo and 50th Anniversary Edition will touch down in Australia in the second half of 2019.
