2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS leaked
All-new SUV flagship outed online ahead of its motor show debut, looking very much like a GLE that's done a few sessions at the gym.
The new-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS has leaked online in a series of images, ahead of its full reveal in New York later this week.
Like the BMW 1 Series earlier today, it seems someone just can't wait to show off the new SUV to the public, with the images originally published by the Middle East's Almuraba, and reposted by Carscoops.
Mercedes-Benz's answer to the BMW X7 follows a very similar formula to its arch nemesis, in the sense the GLS looks very much like an enlarged version of the GLE – because that's pretty much what it is.
We don't have official specifications yet, but the GLS will be quite a bit longer than its GLE sibling, and doesn't have the same C-pillar design that harks back to the original ML like the GLE does.
It does, however, follow a similar design language to its smaller sibling, with notable differences being the LED daytime-running light signature, and three 'squircle' cutouts in the front skid plate element compared to the GLE's more rectangular design.
The interior looks to be very similar as well, with a very similar dashboard layout to its smaller sibling, which is a big step forward compared to the ageing model it replaces.
Like the GLE, three rows of seating will be available, though the GLS will be far more practical and offer proper seating for seven adults, with the option of a more luxurious six-seat layout with limo-like centre console in the rear.
We're also expecting to see a Maybach derivative at some point to headline the range, and duke it out with the likes of the Range Rover SVAutobiography, and the Bentley Bentayga.
As for powertrains, a range of six-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel units with 48V mild-hybrid tech will be carried over from the GLE, along with the likely availability of one or two versions of the AMG 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 – likely in GLS560 and AMG GLS63 forms.
There is also talk of a plug-in hybrid version, though the electrified model probably won't debut for around 12 months after the initial launch.
