Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport heading to Australia, claims faster lap time than Michelin equivalent

New range of high-performance rubber is designed for track weapons and exotics, with some manufacturers already using them for owner track drives.

American tyre company Goodyear is set to launch its new range of ultra and ultra-ultra high performance tyres in Australia from May to better compete with the likes of Michelin and Pirelli in the upper end of the tyre segment.

The manufacturer will release a new range of three tyres that will give a more comprehensive sports and Motorsport tyre coverage. The range includes the Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport, Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport R and the Goodyear SuperSport RS.

According to Goodyear, the base specification tyre is created for cars like the standard Porsche 911 Carrera, BMW M3 and Ford Focus RS. Much like its direct competitor, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, the SuperSports use a two-compound tread, with a wet compound in the centre and a dry compound in the shoulders.

Goodyear says the design allows maximum surface contact with less deformity and better all-weather grip. The compound uses an entirely new carcass with a stiffer sidewall. According to the company’s own internal track testing, the SuperSport tyres are quicker than the Michelins by around 0.54 of a second around the company’s 3.3km race circuit in Mireval, France.

Moving up from the SuperSport is the SuperSport R, which is generally made for driver’s seeking a few track days per year but still able to drive on the road.

Goodyear says it uses all the same technology from the SuperSport, but with additional race-orientated features such as more advanced and stickier compounds and other technologies such as bridge assist, impulse plus construction and power line cover. These tyres are a direct rival for the Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

For example, the bridge assist uses groove bridges that increase stability for high speed cornering. The Rs are made for cars such as the Porsche 911 GT3, BMW M4 CS and Mercedes-AMG C63 S.

The top range of the new SuperSport range is the RS, which as you may guess, are designed for cars such as the 911 GT3 RS. Goodyear says these are the ultimate product that the company has and uses a race compound that it claims is derived from its motorsport division.

The RS tyres will go head to head with the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Rs and the Pirelli Trofeo R. According to Goodyear, Porsche is already using these tyres for their track days and demo activities over the standard original equipment fit Cup 2s.

All three tyres will be available across the range in 37 sizes, however it is unlikely that Australia will see all available sizes at launch.

CarAdvice will bring a review of the new set of tyres from Goodyear in the coming days.
