Euro NCAP: Evoque scores five stars, C5 Aircross gets four

Independent crash authority assesses new SUVs, with varying results for the French model depending on specification.

The latest scores from Euro NCAP crash testing have been revealed, with the new-generation Range Rover Evoque wearing a five-star rating, while the Citroen C5 Aircross only managed four stars in its standard form.

Starting with the Rangie, the British SUV scored an impressive 94% for adult occupant protection, while the child occupant, vulnerable road user and safety assist scores were 87%, 72% and 73% respectively.

Euro NCAP noted the new Evoque has made particular progress in the area of vulnerable road user protection, namely the addition of an active bonnet and AEB that detects pedestrians and cyclists.

The Citroen, meanwhile, received mixed results, much like the new-generation Kia Cerato did in local ANCAP testing earlier this year.

When fitted with its standard safety equipment, the C5 Aircross only manages four stars out of five, despite offering "most safety equipment as standard".

The main differentiating factor between the standard model and the five-star Euro NCAP rated optional safety pack available on European models is the addition of a radar sensor that brings cyclist detection and a higher speed threshold.

In Europe, the C5 Aircross' safety pack is available on all variants in all markets.

"These results show that car manufacturers are still keen and able to achieve the highest safety ratings. It is especially encouraging to see the continued widespread deployment and improvement of advanced technologies such as AEB and lane support," said Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP's secretary general.

"It is good news that some of the basic driver assist technologies will finally be mandated from 2022, but thankfully most vehicle manufacturers are already way ahead of the curve today."

The 2019 Range Rover Evoque is due to arrive in Australia in the coming months (though is on sale now), while the Citroen C5 Aircross is currently scheduled to be released Down Under during the second half of this year.
