Mini Australia has announced pricing and specifications for its first electrified model Down Under, the Countryman Plug-In Hybrid, also known as the Cooper S E All4.
Priced from $57,200 before on-road costs, the plug-in hybrid version of Mini's crossover is $3300 dearer than the Cooper SD All4 diesel, and $2700 less than the flagship John Cooper Works performance variant.
Headlining the specification sheet is what powers the vehicle: a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine on the front axle with an electric motor at the rear.
The petrol motor is taken out of the base Cooper model, making 100kW and 220Nm, paired to a six-speed automatic. Meanwhile, the electric motor generates 65kW and 165Nm, with the latter available from the moment you touch the accelerator pedal.
Mini quotes combined outputs of 165kW and 385Nm, good for a 0-100 time of 6.9 seconds. For reference, the John Cooper Works hits triple figures in 6.5 seconds.
A 7.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack lives under the floor, helping the Countryman PHEV to store enough energy for up to 40km of pure-electric driving, and use fuel at a rate of just 2.1L/100km.
The company claims the battery can be charged in 3 hours 15 minutes via a standard household socket, or 2 hours 15 minutes via the Mini Wallbox.
Despite the battery pack being mounted under the boot floor, the Countryman PHEV's boot measures 405L in five-seat configuration, expanding to 1275L with the rear bench folded.
Like most hybrids, the Countryman Plug-In Hybrid offers several drive modes to tailor the drivetrain to your liking.
Auto eDrive will use both electric and petrol power to get the best balance of performance and efficiency, with the electric motor able to drive on its own at speeds of up to 80km/h.
Max eDrive draws upon electric power primarily, with the motor permitted to spin all the way to 125km/h.
Finally, Save Battery regenerates the battery to 90 per cent charge, then preserves the capacity for later use.
Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels in silver 'Pin Spoke' design, body-coloured roof and mirrors, chrome side scuttles and exhaust tip, rear roof spoiler, LED headlights, Mini logo projection puddle lights, heated exterior mirrors, and special badging.
Inside, there's comfort access, leatherette sports seats in Carbon Black, a three-spoke sports multifunction steering wheel trimmed in leather, Hazy Grey trim inserts, Carbon Black velour floor mats, a Satellite Grey roofline, dual-zone climate control with rear air vents, an electric tailgate, an 8.8-inch navigation system with wireless Apple CarPlay, six-speaker audio, wireless phone charging, and DAB+ digital radio.
As for driver assistance technology, the Countryman PHEV comes as standard with city autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop&go (0-140km/h), forward collision warning, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera with guidelines, and a speed limiter.
Like the wider line-up, the Countryman PHEV is available with a range of equipment and personalisation options, too.
