2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class spied inside and out

The three-pointed star's next-generation luxury flagship has dropped some camouflage, and we get a sneak peek at the portrait-oriented MBUX 2.0 infotainment system.

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been spotted again, this time with less camouflage and false body panels than we've seen previously.

Compared to earlier prototypes, we can now see the S-Class is wearing more production-ready components like the tail-lights and door handles.

It appears the tail-lights will be slimmer than the current units, as will the headlights up front. Overall, the S-Class looks a little lower and wider than the current model – perhaps Mercedes is going for a more dynamic aesthetic.

We're also getting a first look at the S-Class' all-new infotainment system, which moves away from the long tablet-style display joining with the driver's instruments.

Instead, the new S-Class is adopting a portrait-oriented, free-standing tablet display for the central infotainment unit, which should also see the debut of MBUX 2.0, the next generation of Benz's new-generation interface – progress, folks.

Speaking at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA, Mercedes-Benz's chief designer, Gordon Wagner, said the heavy focus on digitisation for the next S-Class has been heavily influenced by the Chinese market, where the car is "more of a rolling game console than a car".

The all-new S-Class will likely be revealed sometime in 2020, ahead of a market launch in late 2020 or early 2021.

Wagner also said in January that the new flagship limousine will bring about the next generation of Mercedes-Benz's exterior and interior design, so we can expect it to set the tone for the next C-Class and E-Class too.
