2020 Karma Revero to use BMW range extender

The updated hybrid will get BMW petrol power, along with a bigger battery and updated electric motors.

The upcoming 2020 Karma Revero will gain a new range-extender petrol engine and improved acceleration times when it launches in Shanghai.

Having worked with BMW on range extender tech since 2015, the new petrol engine is expected to be a variation of the 1.5-litre three-pot used in the i8 and various Mini models. How much power it'll make isn't clear, but in BMW's hybrid hero it produces 170kW and 320Nm.

The updated generator, along with a larger lithium-ion battery pack, will help the fresh Revero hit 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. That's a second faster than the current model can manage, but still slower than than i8.

Karma Automotive has already promised outputs will jump from the current 301kW and 1330Nm, and battery-only range is likely to jump from 80km.

At the moment, the Revero only supports 40kW DC fast charging. Given that's well behind what's currently offered by even low-end electric vehicles, we'd suggest the car will get an e-boost when it's plugged in.

The new Revero will be revealed at the 2019 Shanghai motor show next week. Stay tuned.
