Lexus teases people mover

New model will likely be based on the Toyota Alphard, and will be sold in China, Taiwan and, possibly, other parts of Asia.

Social media accounts for Lexus Taiwan and Lexus China have teased a new vehicle, which will debut at the 2019 Shanghai motor show taking place in the middle of the month.

Lexus says the new car offers "the luxury of space" and gives its occupants a "personal private space".

A report from Chubu Keizai indicates the company is planning to make a new Lexus model at the Toyota Auto Body factory in Inabe City.

This plant, it should be noted, makes the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire large people movers.

Trademark filings uncovered by the Kaizen Factor indicate the car could be known as the LM, with models wearing the LM350 and LM300h badges.

The current-generation Toyota Alphard and Vellfire range is available three engine options: a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, 2.5-litre hybrid, and 3.5-litre V6.

If the trademark report proves accurate, the new Lexus will only be offered with the two more powerful drivetrain options.

Judging by the teaser issued by Lexus, its version of the Alphard will have a unique front-end treatment. It will be interesting to see how much the rest of the vehicle is differentiated from its more plebeian siblings.

Although people movers are going out of fashion in Europe and the States, they are still popular across many parts of Asia. It's likely the Lexus LM will only be sold in that part of the world.
