The facelifted Audi S4 Avant has been spied this week on the snowy roads of Europe, ahead of an anticipated reveal before the end of the year.

Like the A4 and RS4 prototypes snapped in recent months, the updated S4 dons revised designs for the front and rear fascias, incorporating new light clusters and LED signatures at both ends.

A more angular face is in keeping with the latest model range, namely the A1 hatchback, the A6 sedan and wagon, along with the A7 Sportback. The related A5 family is also set to get a similar facelift.

Key changes include a 3D-effect signature for both the daytime-running lights and the tail-lights, along with new bumpers.

There's still no images of the interior, but we're expecting the updated A4 and A5 lines – including the S and RS performance variants – to get a more comprehensive interior update, which should include a new dashboard design and Audi's latest MMI and Virtual Cockpit displays.

Expect screens up to 10.1-inches in size for the central display, while the Virtual Cockpit should get a new look in line with the A1, A6, A7, A8 and Q8.

Beyond that, there should be an extended range of trims and upholsteries on offer, new steering wheels, and the company's latest driver assistance and active safety technologies.

For the S4 specifically, it's likely the cosmetic changes will be complemented by a minor powertrain upgrade.

Currently, the S4 sedan and wagon are powered by a 3.0-litre turbo V6 making 260kW and 500Nm, driving all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic.

We reckon the updated S4 might get 48V mild-hybrid technology, which should give a small boost in outputs for short periods while improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.
