Peugeot rejoins van market: autonomous emergency braking and five year warranty across the range

Van safety is about to get another boost with Peugeot bringing small, medium and large vans with the latest tech as standard.

Advanced safety is finally being rolled out on vehicles that spend more time on the road than most others: delivery vans.

French brand Peugeot has announced it is rejoining the commercial vehicle market in Australia after a five-year absence with a three-model range of small, medium and large vans.

While Mercedes and Volkswagen have autonomous emergency braking on certain vans – and Ford recently introduced AEB on all Transits – Peugeot will be the first company in Australia to have AEB standard across all variants of a three-model range. Every model will also come standard with a rear camera and rear parking sensors.

The rollout of AEB on more commercial vehicles will likely put pressure on other popular vans such as the Toyota Hiace, Hyundai iLoad, Renault Trafic, Mercedes Vito and LDV G10 which lack AEB, even as an option.

The one caveat is that the first all-new Toyota Hiace in 15 years – due mid-2019 – is expected to have AEB across the range.

The Renault Trafic is available with AEB overseas and the Fiat Ducato is also available with the same tech in Europe given that it’s the identical twin to the Peugeot Boxer. Only the badges are different.

The super-sized Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter gained AEB with the recent arrival of new-generation models.

In the compact van market only the Volkswagen Caddy has AEB standard; autonomous emergency braking tech is not available locally on the Renault Kangoo or Citroen Berlingo.

Peugeot will also introduce a five-year/200,000km warranty on its vans following the rollout of a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty on Peugeot passenger cars in February 2018.

This compares to a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty on Ford and Volkswagen vans and a five-year/160,000km warranty on Toyota and Hyundai vans.

Renault vans have three years/unlimited km coverage, Mercedes vans have a three-year/200,000km warranty, and LDV vans have a three-year/100,000km warranty.

The local distributor of Peugeot and Citroen vehicles initially said Citroen would become the French group’s primary van brand in Australia.

However, a change in strategy in Europe will pitch Peugeot as the mainstream and van brand globally while Citroen will be repositioned upmarket.

Peugeot also has a slightly larger dealer footprint in Australia, with 33 local showrooms versus 23 sites for Citroen.

The Citroen Berlingo van remains in the local line-up for now but it is not clear if it will be replaced with the next generation model.

In a media statement the managing director of Peugeot Australia, Ben Farlow, said “commercial vehicle owners and operators shouldn’t sacrifice safety, comfort and convenience just because it’s a tool of trade”.

“The all-new Peugeot commercial vehicle range addresses the segment’s demands for safety, functionality, low running costs and total cost of ownership; including five-year warranty,” he said.
