2020 Hyundai Venue leaked

Partially-concealed images surface online showing new crossover's strong links to current SUV range.

Leaked images of the upcoming Hyundai Venue crossover have surfaced online this week, ahead of the new model's official reveal on April 17 at the New York motor show.

First posted by several outlets from India, and republished by Carscoops, the images show what appears to be production-ready prototypes with their camouflage lifted up, revealing the Venue's key styling features.

Up front we can see a version of Hyundai's cascading grille, flanked by a two-tier headlight arrangement that echos the designs of the Kona and Santa Fe.

At the back we can see the 'Venue' script across the tailgate, as per the teaser released last week, along with 'SX' and 'Turbo' badges on this navy-coloured vehicle – indicating a turbocharged petrol engine will be offered in select markets.

While specifications haven't been confirmed for the Australian market ahead of the Venue's local launch in the second half of next year, the powertrain in question will likely be a version of the 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit used across various Hyundai and Kia models globally.

In Australia, the 1.0-litre triple is available in two states of tune in the Kia Picanto and Kia Rio, quoting outputs of 74kW/172Nm and 88kW/172Nm respectively.

Both engines are also available in the Hyundai i20 in Europe available with both manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

There's also an image of the interior, showing the venue's dashboard layout along with the steering wheel and driver's instruments.

It appears Hyundai is going for a minimalistic approach to physical buttons and dials, with the centre stack dominated by a large touchscreen that is integrated into the dash fascia, though still sticks out slightly which is in keeping with the current trend of tablet-style displays.

The vehicle pictured looks to be a high-spec variant, featuring the large display, climate control air-conditioning, and the full array of USB and power sockets above of the storage area ahead of the gearshift. All the buttons on the dash and steering wheel appear to be filled in, too.

When it arrives in Australia during the second half of 2019, the Venue is likely to play a dual role of tapping into the light car market – where the soon-to-be discontinued Accent currently competes – while also offering a less outlandishly-styled option in the small SUV segment the larger Kona competes in.

The Venue is believed to have a greater focus on maximising interior space in a compact footprint, too, meaning that it should offer equivalent cabin practicality to the Kona despite smaller dimensions.

Pricing is likely to start just under $20,000 – though this is unconfirmed – given the Kona currently kicks off at $23,500, and top out around the $30,000 mark.

Further details will come to hand at the Venue's official reveal in New York later this month. Stay tuned.
