Toyota Australia launching three new hybrids before year’s end

The all-new RAV4 and Corolla sedan have already been confirmed, with one more mystery model on the way.

Toyota Australia's hybrid expansion plans are in full swing, with the company confirming three new petrol-electric models will hit showrooms before the end of this year.

Speaking with CarAdvice, a Toyota spokesperson said the new RAV4 and Corolla sedan hybrids make up two of the three, with the final member of the trio unconfirmed at this stage.

"We’ll be able to confirm future hybrid product plans closer to launch," the spokesperson said of the mystery model.

The three new hybrid models will be joined by a fourth before mid-way through next year, and we have several guesses as to what they may be.

Prime candidates include the C-HR and Kluger SUVs, both of which offer hybrid options in overseas markets and offer significant volume locally – especially the Kluger, which consistently sees over 1000 registrations a month in Australia.

There's also a hybrid version of the current-generation Yaris available elsewhere, but its age and the price-sensitive segment in which it competes means Toyota could wait for the next-generation model. It shouldn't be far off – we might see it before mid-2020.

Hybrid sales for Toyota have been on the rise recently, with more than half of Camry sales being petrol-electric variants, while the new-generation Corolla hatchback is seeing around one-third take-up.

The new RAV4 is expected to have around 20 per cent of its sales hybrid when it launches in the coming months, too.
