BMW i4, iNext electric cars to have 600km driving range

Starting in 2020, BMW will begin a more formal assault on the electric vehicle market, and it has begun revealing select details ahead of the push.

BMW has revealed drivetrain details about its upcoming iX3 crossover, i4 sedan, and iNext crossover, as it prepares its full-scale onslaught on the electric vehicle market.

All are said to use a variation on BMW's fifth-generation electric drivetrain technology. The i4 "four-door coupe" will have a driving range of over 600 kilometres under the more difficult WLTP test cycle.

Power and torque figures have yet to be made public, but the Bavarian automaker says the i4 will have a 0-100km/h time of 4.0 seconds, and a top speed of over 200km/h. Production of the i4 begins at BMW's Munich factory in 2021.

The 2021 iNext crossover will also use the automaker's fifth-generation electric drivetrain, and will also have a range of over 600km.

Said to employ BMW's latest modular construction technology, the iNext crossover will serve as the company's technology flagship, and will include Level 3 autonomous driving and access to numerous online services.

In a break with tradition, it will also feature flagpole-style wing mirrors.

Before either of these models start trundling out of the factory gate, the iX3 goes into production next year. All versions of the iX3 will be made in Shenyang, China, at a factory BMW operates in conjunction with Brilliance.

The iX3 has a claimed driving range of over 400km, and will support 150kW DC fast charging stations.

Unlike the existing i3 and i8, the iX3 does not feature a unique and attention-grabbing body. Instead, the main visual differentiation between it and the X3 will be restricted to streamlined bumpers, alloy wheels and a new grille.
